Introducing the newest member of our family

No, it’s not a human baby. Or a dog-baby (although we’re planning to get one of those, too).
This is Elmer Lemon Soup.

Mr. Elmer Lemon Soup, to you.

Mr. Elmer Lemon Soup, to you.

I was reading Cooked, by Michael Pollan, and got excited by the idea that cooking my own food, instead of relying on manufactured or restaurant food, could help me lose weight. And then when I read the Air chapter, and it turned out that you can make your own bread starter with just flour, water, and microbes, well. I work in a hospital and I have two kids. We’ve got all the bacteria, yeast, and viruses you could ask for.
Plus, Anastasia likes to stir Elmer Lemon Soup.
Why does our starter have a name? Well, Chatelaine suggested it, and I liked the sound of Elmer, and then Max dubbed the Lemon Soup bit because of the sour smell (which is normal. It’s sourdough starter).
So, for the first time I can remember, I hit a series of back to back shifts, and instead of asking Matt to buy a whole bunch of food to stock up like a bear before hibernation, I made sourdough pizza. I made bread. It was pretty cool.
